The craft

Chikankari, a living tradition

Chikankari is a delicate white-on-white hand embroidery that grew in the courts of Awadh. Worked with fine needles on light fabrics like muslin, mal mal and georgette, it is known for floral motifs, shadow work and an airy, lace-like finish.

Every piece passes through many hands: the block printer who stamps the design, the artisan who embroiders it stitch by stitch, and the washer who reveals the finished work.

The making of a piece

I

Printing

The design is block printed onto the cut fabric with a washable dye, mapping every motif.

II

Embroidery

Artisans embroider the pattern by hand, choosing stitches for each petal, vine and border.

III

Finishing

The piece is washed to remove the print, then starched and pressed until the work shines through.
